The Good Life – A Chasing After the Wind
Readings:
From last week: “So I, a prisoner of the Lord, urge you to /live a life worthy of the calling you have received/.” Ephesians 4:1
Our calling by grace has bestowed on us,
- Forgiveness of sins
- Daily renewal, unshakable hope
- Guarantees us a glorious eternal life
In light of this, we are to live humbly, with gentleness, patience, etc.
The Good Life
What does society think a good life is?
King Solomon has a lot to say:
What Solomon said about his chasing of the good life
Solomon built his life around the trifecta of money, pleasure and fame – and he despaired.
- Accumulating wealth is a waste of time
- Life is disappointing
- Life is random
Money, pleasure, fame, and more are counterfeit gods
“The only way to free ourselves from the destructive influence of counterfeit gods is to turn back to the true one, the living God….he’s the only one who if you find him, can truly fulfill you, and if you fail him, can truly forgive you.” ~ Tim Keller /Counterfeit gods.
Why do the rich and famous commit suicide? Kurt Cobain, Robin Williams, Heath Ledger
And why do the less rich and famous self-destruct too?
- Substance abuse, gambling, affairs, etc.
GOD’S GREAT INVITATION (Isaiah 55:1-2)
“Come, all you who are thirsty,
come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.
Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and you will delight in the richest of fare.
HOW DO WE COME TO GOD?
Through Christ.
John 6:35 – I am the bread of life
John 7:37 – Let anyone who is thirsty come to me
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy, I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
THE CONCLUSION OF THE MATTER
“Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments. Eccl. 12;13
God’s greatest commandment – Mark 9:7; John 3:16
